Camps and COVID Precautions: Where Do We Stand Now?

Many of us are tired of worrying about COVID and just want our kids to get out there and learn and have fun. Others of us have a vulnerable family member or family member suffering from long COVID. We know that the chances of getting long COVID are very high (between 20-48% high depending on which study you read) and increase with every infection.

All of the camps we surveyed will follow the New York State Department of Education and the NYC Department of Health guidelines. This includes common vaccination requirements, CPR, and other standard health requirements but no specific COVID requirements at the moment. This could change, but I don’t feel that it is likely we will return to a full mask mandate anytime soon.

Your kids can always continue to wear masks. It does help if you are wearing them correctly. A lot of kids only wore their masks half on their faces and took them off constantly, which is why mandates didn’t always make a big difference. If you are looking for camps that are the safest for preventing COVID this summer, consider camps that are mostly outside, like Trail Blazers or Koko NYC. Other camps have advanced air filtration which helps when you require an indoor setting.

We surveyed the camps participating in our sponsored Camp Expo for their thoughts on COVID precautions this year. The majority of the camps responded that they follow Department of Education and CDC guidelines which require self-reporting and exposure notifications. Some camps had some specific things to say which we have included here.

At Chelsea Piers Brooklyn, like our sister locations, pride ourselves on always providing a safe and clean facility for our patrons.– Chelsea Piers Brooklyn

Between high-tech air filtration systems, to constant cleaning and disinfecting, Chelsea Piers Brooklyn goes above and beyond standard precautions.

KoKo NYC is run completely outdoors which makes it a great option for those worried about COVID transmission.

We are grateful to run fully outdoors in the summer in our natural workshop space, The KoKo Lot. This allows everyone to have their own space, letting us worry less about COVID and more about creating. – Koko NYC

Homage Skateboard Academy utilizes a complete A/C and Ventilation system with both Hepa filtration and UV sanitization to keep our air fresh and clean. In addition we have hand sanitizer stations around the facility and encourage all students and coaches to wash their hands frequently throughout the day.  Students are encouraged to wear masks, however masks are not required.

We also spend time outdoors each day for fresh air! – Homage Skateboard Academy

Right now, masks are not required, but recommended at Mark Morris Dance Center. They have extras available. The Dance Center has advanced air filtration with MERV-13 filters. Read all about their health precautions here.
